In questo libro Philippe Daverio ci accompagna alla scoperta dell'età moderna, ovvero del Secolo Lungo che parte dalla Rivoluzione francese e finisce nella catastrofe della Prima guerra mondiale. Questo volume affronta i temi più importanti della modernità attraverso oltre seicento opere d'arte raccolte tematicamente per vettori storici: quello politico, da Delacroix e Géròme al Quarto stato di Pellizza da Volpedo; quello della macchina e del lavoro, da Turner a Courbet e a Boccioni; quello della fuga dalla realtà nella dolce vita della Belle Epoque, nell'esotismo e nel sogno - da Tissot a Manet, da Dante Gabriel Rossetti a Fortuny, Gauguin e Van Gogh -, fino al Simbolismo e all'Art Nouveau. Fra i padiglioni e le sale del museo sono previste anche soste in locali e ristoranti a tema, dove si immagina di sorseggiare un caffè o gustare un pranzo circondati dalle opere dei Macchiaioli al Caffè Michelangelo, e degli Impressionisti alla Closerie des Lilas. Un gioco serio, che scardina il nostro abituale punto di vista e ci fa ritrovare il gusto di guardare la pittura e leggere il nostro passato guidati dalla penna più impertinente d'Italia.
Philippe Daverio (17 October 1949 – 2 September 2020) was an Italian art historian, gallerist, teacher, writer, author, politician, and television personality.[1][2][3]
Daverio was born in Mulhouse, Alsace in 1949 from an Italian father, builder Napoleone Daverio, and an Alsatian mother, Aurelia Hauss. He was the fourth of six children.
